The opposite is sacrificing the future for present gain. It can be called rent-seeking, redistribution, accumulating national debt, prison, crime, or even voting. It's all the same pattern. When a man lets in Muslim immigrants he trades the benefit of not being called a racist today for the cost of a thousand years of misery for his descendants.
Sacrificing the future for the present, is the most accurate possible definition of crime that a person could create. The BP oil spill, black robbery, murder, and a hundred other acts all destroy a future for present gain and the security of others for self-interest. Crime is both the act of selling the future and externalizing the costs.
One is always trading on either the future or the present. Democracy is a nation of criminals frittering away their children's future for temporary benefits and prestige. It has a short-term, and thus criminal, time preference. It alienates property from the violence needed to secure its defense. The result is that all property holding is simply usufructuary in nature. They have no incentive to secure its defense. This raises their time preference. The ability to alienate it by sale means that an intelligent strategy is to maximize its gain, even to the point of wasting. Examples of this abound in problems such as soil salinification, top soil erosion, and planned obsolescence. The democratic get it now culture comes to infect all other aspects of the whole culture.
In a system of royalty one makes rank by intermarrying up. The higher is what is valued, not the average. The scheming necessary to achieve the level of supreme monarch requires generations of planning and arranged marriages. The system rewards and selects for long-term thinking and strategic thought. The fundamental incentive structure of the whole society is to cultivate a long view of things, to place the common good above private gain. One may inherent wealth and titles and so it is in one's interest to protect the whole thing: one might wind up owning it some day. If we define crime as the destruction of the future for present profit, then democracy is crime. But even more than that, democracy is a marketplace for the purchasing of laws. So it is disorganized crime where multiple, competing rent-seekers bid for maximum wealth at their neighbors expense. Libertarians can do nothing about it. A senator sells other people's money in exchange for campaign contributions. He arranges redistribution, tax breaks, subsidies, and welfare provisions in exchange for the funds necessary to enrich himself and get reelected. He is a multi-party broker. A libertarian congressman is simply an unprofitable broker with nothing to sell.
The values of the criminal marketplace come to infect everything. Manners are tossed aside. Combined with the sexual revolution and cultural Marxism, even gender and sexual morals are attacked. Democracy produces a culture of moral incontinence,

The democratic politician and the electorate are bound together by a circuit of reciprocal incitement, in which each side drives the other to ever more shameless extremities of hooting, prancing cannibalism, until the only alternative to shouting is being eaten." -- Nick LandSince ideology is downstream from incentives, the democratic virus programs a culture of mass-delusion, where every man acts like a mini politician attempting to persuade his neighbor to support this or that, and phrasing everything in the lowest common denominator in order to persuade even the simplest of rubes. The whole political life of the nation takes on a folksy, brain-dead air, and the cognitive miser becomes a respectable man. Democracy values the average, and since the high can always stoop down and loosen their standards, but the low are rarely capable of living up to higher standards, the result of leveling in every matter, is the decay of everything. The low can never become high, but the high can always become low, and so they do—relentlessly.
Democracy loves the average idiot and condescends to the intelligent. It becomes filled with willfully self-deceptive liberal degenerates who pass for its version of a cognitive elite on the left, and rude cretin cognitive misers who won't shut up about their guns and constitution on the right—not noticing there is no constitution. The whole political culture becomes a retarded slap fight with the noble conversations of the res publica revolving around who the bigger racist is, or whether or not so-and-so is un-American. Fallacies pass for logic and smugness for intelligence. Anything to pander to the lowest mouth-breather.
The system of competitive criminality become a culture of mass-delusion. A behemoth of indoctrination springs up to control and shape the ideological opinions of the mass of screening illogical idiots. The system must believe in equality to function. It comes to have a whole series of delusions necessary to justify all differences between groups. It tells the incapable they are oppressed. It tells the violent they are victims. In a system of competitive redistribution there is an incentive to be the biggest victim possible. It cannot think beyond its delusions. Its technologically produced wealth serves as a paradox which masks the stink of cultural decay. It becomes prosperous for so long that its people forget basic survival skills, like not letting in millions of endless hordes of heathen Uruk-hai jihadists. Or like not starting wars you have no will to finish in hopeless regions you lack the manly courage to glassify.
The system drowns from its own prosperity-induced delusional idealism. The drowning is what saves it. Hardship is induced and people wake up. It sets itself right in the end.
